If a procedure is attempted and then aborted/unsuccessful would we still capture the procedure? Examples: Reduction not able to be successfully completed. Ultrasound not able to visualize what they were looking for.
If a procedure is unable to be completed, code to the furthest step completed. If reposition is not achieved, you could code immobilization, or traction, or inspection, whatever piece was actually achieved. For the ultrasound, in your example, the scan was completed, they did the scan, they just didn’t see what they wanted. But you would still code the ultrasound. If they stopped the ultrasound before completing the entire region, then you could code the part done. For example, they start a FAST, which is abdominal/pelvic, cardiac, maybe pleura. If they see the spleen, and then stop without scanning entire region or anything else, just code to spleen. To consider an image procedure not done, it would be that the patient went there, maybe got on the table or started but immediately stopped, perhaps patient condition changed and they couldn’t do it. In that case, you do lose the procedure.
